With the Christmas party season in full swing, over half (53%) say they will drink more at Christmas than any other time of the year.

For 16% the work Christmas party will see them drink some of the highest amounts during the festive season. On average five and a half units will be drunk at each social occasion – roughly three pints of beer, two large glasses of wine or three alcopops.

22% will drink soft drinks between alcoholic ones in order to stay in control of their drinking. When it comes to eating, almost one in three (30%) try to keep an eye on what they eat at Christmas.

However, many see this time of year as a chance to unwind. 43% of those who say they drink more during the festive period do so because they want to relax and enjoy themselves.

It seems the indulgence doesn’t last too long though. When it comes to making New Year’s resolutions one in ten (10%) have previously promised themselves they will drink less.

Research was conducted for the Drink Aware Trust between 23rd – 29th November 2012 with 4,024 respondents.
